Monitor Calibration | Austin Photographer

As I sat here, editing photos to show you, I noticed something yesterday. I work with two monitors because I often have so many things open at once – Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Outlook, a web browser, InDesign, etc. I was editing a great portrait on my right monitor. I slid my Photoshop window over to the left monitor to do a side-by-side comparison of two things. As I did, I noticed a complete color-shift in the photo. The image transitioned from a beautiful warm, perfectly exposed photo to a cool, dark photo on the left screen.

What this means is my two monitors were calibrated differently. UGH.  So, I spent tons of time online trying to manually make my monitors correlate and re-calibrate correctly, but it’s difficult. That led to me spending time researching software to calibrate the monitor for me. My monitors were previously calibrated to be the same, but overtime, the calibration changes.  I realized it would be so much better for me to invest in software that would constantly make sure they were the same.

So, for any of you photographers out there who either haven’t re-calibrated your monitor in a while, DO IT. Or, if you’ve never done it, get it done.  It’s imperative that what we’re producing on our screens becomes the final printed product for our clients. It’s a matter of quality control.  There are tons of options for software, but what I’ve decided to go with is the ColorVision Sypder3Pro.  You can go to the website and read all about it if you’re interested; I won’t discuss the specifications here.

I had it overnighted so I can resume editing and get more images up on the blog for you. I am such a dork because I’m so excited to get it set up and relieve my stress from trying to manually calibrate the monitors.  I will hopefully have some great things up for you today and tomorrow, so stay tuned.  Let’s hope FedEx gets here ASAP.

FYI, another product I heard great reviews about was X-Rite Eye-One.  I’m not in any way being paid to promote either product, but I wanted to share since I invested so much time researching them.
