Project in Progress | Magan’s Lens | Austin Lifestyle Photography

Let it be known that I absolutely hate going to the doctor. I definitely don’t dislike the actual doctors. Dustyn has been asking me forever to get a physical. He grew up going to the doctor on an extremely regular schedule. Our dentist appointments are scheduled so far out because the man actually loves going.  I finally committed to going to get a check-up this morning. Not only did I have to stand on the scale to weigh-in (eek!), I had to get a tuberculosis shot, and I had to go get blood work.  Geez Louise!

As I continue to wallow in my disdain for doctor’s appointments, I’m going to share something with you that makes me loads happier.  I grew up with a Mom and Grandma who were extremely creative. My Mom is a teacher and is brilliant at her job – always creating and playing. I get my love (or obsession) for creative fonts from her.  My Grandma is a quilter – sewing all the time and making keepsakes for the family.  Somewhere over the course of the last year, my Betty-homemaker creativity kicked in. I decided it would be an awesome idea to learn to knit.

This has grown into me making tons of scarves, and has fed into the idea of me wanting to learn how to sew.  I recently acquired my very first sewing machine, not knowing a single thing about how to use it. I opened it up, took it out of the box, and read the manual.  From there, I created a fun little bag (I figured if 8-year-old kids could make it in their sewing class at JoAnn Fabrics, I was capable of doing so too). I’ve had material since before I got the machine that was set aside for making custom sofa pillows. We have a lovely dark grey sofa and I wanted to make things a little more fun, peppy, and chic.

My Grandma sat down with me yesterday afternoon and taught me how to sew in a zipper. I videoed her demonstration using my nifty iPhone so I could watch each part of the process over and over until I could figure it out.  Once I got back to Austin, I purchased two zippers and a few more things I needed. I headed home and began sewing. The first pillow was definitely trial and error, probably taking me close to two hours since I had to do the zipper for the first time.  The second only took around an hour and was less stressful – my stitches looked prettier and straighter.  I have two more that are lined up to be made, but I don’t have matching zippers or thread yet.  I’ll follow up once they’re done to show you the completed project, but for now, here’s what I’ve done…

*Please share with me any fun, crafty websites you may know of. Anything knitting or sewing related? DIY?  I am enjoying spending my down time working on these projects that are making our home feel more “us”.

The machine, a little extra fabric, a rotary cutter, scissors, and a cutting mat.

The two finished pillows along with the fabric I intend to use for the final two pillows.  I wanted something that coordinated, but didn’t exactly match. Something modern mixed with something sweet and feminine with a few punches of color.

It’s true. In fact, the very color on my fingers right now is this new OPI color that coordinates with the striped material I will soon be sewing.  Lovin’ this color…it’s called “Ski Teal we Drop.”

Tira J - I LOVE this blog post! Did you see mine on the DIY garland? I use David’s grandmother’s sewing machine and I have pretty much taught myself how to sew, for the most part. David is actually better at it than me. Here’s a tip for you with sewing, and you may already do this. Wash ALL of your fabric first and then press it with the iron. And for example, if you want to get a more finished line on the seam for the pillow, I sew it all together and then press it again once I flip it before I close it and put the stuffing/pillow in. Sorry for being so long winded. Oh, and I LOVE OPI! I have “Dim Sum Plum” on right now and need to stock up on some fall pedi faves. xoxo

Carly and David, Engaged | Magan’s Lens | Austin Engagement Photographer

Love is displayed in all types of ways.  For every couple, and more so for every person, it’s completely different.  The kind of love Carly and David have is beautiful and mesmerizing.

Carly mentioned she was nervous about their engagement session when we first began shooting. She feared having terrible, cheesy, overly posed photos.  I assured her that we would have fun and that more than anything, their session was about them and getting some really fantastic shots. I knew that I wanted to capture how they interacted, and then make minimal adjustments from there. Man, oh man. What I learned by observing is how much David loves Carly (and of course vice versa too!).

He shows his love for her by the way he wants to protect her.

He holds her just to be closer to her.

He will be silly just to see her beautiful, perfect smile.

He loves to watch her to make sure that she’s okay.

Their love is beautiful. I had the most difficult time culling down their images. How could I not post the one of him adoringly looking down at her and the one of them them laughing and being silly?  I really tried to mix things up, though I felt like I could have posted so much more.  Might be puttin’ up a gallery to feature you guys.;)

Carly and David, I am so excited to know you. To be a part of your engagement and upcoming wedding. Thank you for letting me observe and photograph your love.  You guys are awesome!

Here are a few words from Carly and David about their wedding and how they met. More to follow soon from Carly as she’s been traveling ’round the country!

How did you meet? Tell me about it – from both of your perspectives.
David – Carly and I met at the at a swing dance at the Fed on the corner of 24th and San Gabriel. I had been going for several months, and Carly was only there because a friend had dragged her there. I took note of her from the very first time I saw her. She came back the next week, and then we went our our first date.
Carly – I don’t remember David from the first dance! I was a little tipsy – my friend and I went for beers after work and it was only when I was slightly drunk that swing dancing finally seemed like a good idea. At the Fed, you dance with loads of people. It wasn’t until the next weekend at the Halloween dance that David really surprised me by asking my to dance by name (I had no idea what his name was!). What was also shocking was that David’s costume choice was a hot-pink-crushed-velvet-frilly shirt. He kept following me around after our first dance trying to get my attention, and I was rather confused because I assumed I wasn’t his type.

What’s your engagement story? Tell me all the juicy details! Groom, were you nervous? Bride, did you pick up on the surprise?
David
– One year after we first set eyes on each other, we went back to the Fed for the Halloween dance dressed at Mary Poppins and Bert. I was planning on proposing that night, but I hadn’t arranged for anything fancy. I didn’t have a ring yet, and I didn’t hire a photographer, but it was perfect all the same. She had no idea it was coming, but I was still a little nervous. I kept on going over what I was going to say in my head. Lucky for me, there was a photographer working the dance, so I hailed him over before I proposed. After the proposal, we won 2nd place in the costume contest.
Carly – He’s right. I had no idea. Its funny, we had talked about marriage and he had asked questions about how the proposal “should go” – ie. “should he pick out a ring without me”. I had daydreamed about how the proposal would go – and I thought the Fed would be the most meaningful place to do it, but I never told him or anyone. He managed the proposal of my dreams without any hinting! And yes, we won 2nd place in the costume contest to top off the night. Everyone loved him as Bert. Quite an improvement over crushed pink velvet.

What have you enjoyed MOST about being engaged and planning your wedding? Include Bride and Groom input!
David – I am going to answer this one because it is a tough one. It is tough because I have not really enjoyed planning the wedding much at all. As a matter of fact, I wanted to put the planning off for as long as possible after we got engaged, which didn’t go over so well with Carly.

Planning the wedding had deepened my relationship with Carly. We have grown much closer together because planning the wedding forces us to work together. I have enjoyed planning this wedding because it has brought Carly and I closer to each other.

Mini-Session Announcement | Magan’s Lens | Austin Family Photographer

This past weekend, I was in San Antonio for a family session. I was on my way back to Austin and went to Chick-fil-A to grab some food. As I drove through the parking lot, trying to weave my way to the Chick-fil-A, I realized how large the shopping center was that I found myself lost in.  After countless stop signs and ten minutes, I finally found the restaurant. When I left, I had no idea what the quickest way to get out of there would be. I drove around (probably in circles) for what seemed like forever. While I was on this “tour” of the shopping center, I passed by a Hobby Lobby.  All along their storefront, they had every size of pre-lit Christmas tree possible on display and lit up.  I actually stopped to think, “August 21st and Christmas is already on display.”

The whole thought of Christmas made me stop in my tracks, however, I also understand the importance of preparation and starting to discuss it.  School just started for your kiddos; before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here.  The fall is one of the absolute busiest times for photographers. To alleviate some of the stress of having new family pictures taken and figuring out Christmas cards, I’m offering mini-sessions on the following dates:

Saturday, September 25th

Saturday, October 16th

Mini-sessions are ideal for the family who is swamped by tons of activities and non-stop schedules. They are 30-45 minutes long versus the normal one to two hours. Special packages are available for you to quickly choose your photos for Christmas cards and gifts for grandparents.

To schedule your mini-session, you can click here to choose your time and make the payment to reserve the day/time you prefer.  If you have questions, you are always welcome to email me.
