Wedding Color Inspiration | Austin Wedding Photographer

When I think back to my wedding, one of the most difficult things to do was choose a color palette. What color would my bridesmaid dresses be? What flowers would coordinate well or even be in season at the time? There was an overwhelming amount of information to absorb. I realized when speaking to a few brides over the last week that it hasn’t gotten any easier; it’s still a tough decision to make. I have found a few resources that I think you might be interested in looking through if you want to be inspired.

Up first is Pantone’s Fashion Color Report for Fall 2010. It’s unbelievable how far out they think about fashion, but if you want a heads up on what colors will be trendy or widely available, you need to check this out.  The link takes you to a 62 page online document with different designers, hand drawings of models, and their color picks for the fall. This is the front cover of the fashion report.

This last screen shot is of one of the color options, Purple Orchid. The designer, Adrienne, discusses the color and what items would be “must haves” in Purple Orchid.

Go check out Pantone’s site for more inspiration, awesome links, and to find out what the “Color of the Year” is.

Another personal favorite inspiration site is Restored 316 Designs. Lauren frequently posts inspiration photos or color schemes that work well together. You should check out this link to see some of the recent inspiration colors she’s put together.

For now, that’s all. I really like sharing these ideas and resources with you. I hope you’ll find them useful! Let me know what you think about the websites.  Leave some blog love (aka: comments).

Happy Valentine’s Day

Thank you for swinging by the blog! I hope you are able to go outside and enjoy the gorgeous sunshine today.  I’m trying to soak it all in…

How was your Valentine’s Weekend? Dustyn and I celebrated three wonderful birthdays this weekend, and had a fantastic Valentine’s dinner with four of our greatest friends, Derryk, Leslie, Daniel, and Anna. Our restaurant of choice was PF Chang’s (YUM); we were there for nearly two and a half hours, as they had a great Valentine’s special with multiple courses. I love it when places do that… it’s not every day we get to enjoy so many guilty pleasures.

This post is about a bit of Magan’s Lens love today.  I’ve been working hard on getting marketing materials better organized, working out all the pricing, and making really cute prints. The templates for all of my layouts were created by the Photographer Cafe.  Here’s a little taste of what I’ve gotten so far…

(For all of you photographers, I’m using a fun new lens.. the Canon 50/1.2. W.O.W. I think I’m in love with the images it takes.)

I’m also having a ton of fun with the Canon Fisheye (15/2.8). Here are a few images of me goofing around. Don’t mind that I just got done working out in the very bottom images.

What do you think about the marketing? How do you like the fisheye lens? I’m very excited to use it at Greg and Amanda’s wedding this weekend!

The Valentine’s Canvas

It arrived this morning.  The UPS man actually got here so early he woke Dustyn and I. After tugging in a big box from the UPS man, it was hard not to explain to Dustyn what was inside. I was also itching to see it up close and personal. I have received several fun emails from the company, Simply Canvas, over the last few days as it was packaged and shipped to its new home. Our home!

So, I let Dustyn open it right away. There was no chance I was going to be able to withstand opening it if he didn’t.  Are you tired of me referring to it as “it”? Well, to refresh your memory, this is where I first posted about it.

And this, my friends, is the final product! This favorite picture of ours from Ocean Beach has been transformed into a lovely canvas that will soon adorn the currently blank dark grey wall in our apartment.

And this, is the front.  It is propped on a chair for the photo because I can’t hang it quite yet.  I’ll explain why in a second.

The lovely Gallery Wrap Canvas featured above will be hanging near these bad boys. I couldn’t grab a full length shot [yet] without having to move lots of things around, but these are the two pieces to an old railroad sign. I purchased them this past fall from the Round Top Antique Show. I need to hang the signs after I find appropriate bolts for them and then I’ll hang the Gallery Wrap. Problem is, I might need another wrap in the same size to balance the wall out.  I’ll post pictures when this project is done.

Tira J - Awesome!!!!!! I need to order my first canvas from them! How long did they take, and was that paper on the back, or is it fabric.

February 11, 2010 - 5:25 pm

Magan - Tira, it took one week to receive the order. The quality is really great! The back is covered with a paper backing. I think it’s the same as WHCC. :)

Gloria - I LOVE it! I hope I can get some canvases sometime for our living room… I have a vision of some of my favorites in different shapes and sizes. But it’ll have to wait a while… maybe ’til I win the lottery:)

Alex - This is friggin’ awesome. What an amazing shot.

[good deed] Tuesday

Sometime this past fall, my friends and I realized that we all had a desire to volunteer and help an organization out.  My friend Anna is an aspiring author. She wanted to surround herself with children again, as she was previously a teacher. Krista, too, had recently left her job and wanted to dedicate her time to a worthy cause. Adjusting to working from home was quite the feat for me, so having time with my friends and doing something together felt like the perfect solution.

Anna found the Texas Baptist Children’s Home; she and I took a tour and learned about the children living in the cottages. I left that day feeling so grateful for my parents and childhood. These kids, ranging across a broad spectrum in age, have so many different stories and backgrounds. They live with cottage parents who are on very strict budgets. The cottage parents cook every single meal, unless volunteers drop off a meal for them.

Bingo. This was the perfect way for us to volunteer.

When we started cooking, we were told that we could do it once in a while, once a week, once a month, or however much we wanted. As we aren’t expert chefs, we started with the promise to get together every other week. That quickly subsided into cooking every Tuesday. We took a brief break at Christmas as two of the three of us were leaving Texas to visit family elsewhere.

Last week, we picked up where we left off and began scheduling our meals again. This week, we made a delicious baked ziti, a salad, parfaits, and garlic bread.  A cottage of nine was able to enjoy the food prepared by us. A house mom was able to take the night off from slaving away in the kitchen.  The cottage was able to sit around the table and swap stories about their day.

We are now a group of four girls gathering together to cook for the TBCH, and it’s awesome.  Sarah is new to our group, and I love the life she brings to our group.  Not only is it rewarding to get to make food for the cottages, but occasionally, we make a little extra for ourselves. Once our husbands are free from work, we invite them to join us for dinner at whichever house we cooked at that day.

What I’m learning is that volunteering and helping out brings attention to the greater picture.  It helps me forget about what’s going on in the world of Magan’s Lens, allows me to not think about marketing, or selfishly spending every waking moment on myself.  I am learning that everyone has a story to tell. My goal and my desire is to be able to tell that story with stills. The wonderful stills created via photography.

February 11, 2010 - 7:58 am

Gloria - I pass by TBCH every time I take my daughters to visit their dad or pick them up. I’ve looked at the website before, wondering if there was a way I could help. Unfortunately, I don’t really find the time to volunteer, although I’d like to. I suppose I’ll have that kind of time when my daughters are a little older. It makes me smile to see that someone I know DOES have the time to volunteer for such a great organization:)

February 11, 2010 - 5:26 pm

Magan - Something else I’ve considered is contacting them to drop of a dessert (like cupcakes) on a random Saturday. Maybe you and the girls could do that one day! I’m sure they’d love making them. :)

February 12, 2010 - 8:25 am

Gloria - That is a great idea for us. Will you e-mail me the contact information I would need to set that up? It’s actually even a good idea for tomorrow or Sunday afternoon.

Austin Child Photographer | Swings and Bubbles

For any photographer, I dare say, it is a dream to photograph children who are unafraid of the camera. Unafraid to play, explore, smile, burst out giggles, and completely relax. I think it’s rare for that to happen, but oh my heart sings when it does.  In this post, you met S and E. This past Saturday, we celebrated little S’s birthday with her grandparents, friends, and family. I tugged along my camera because it’s just a personal goal to shoot when I can. I adore these girls, and the day was glorious. The sun was out to play after being in hiding for well over a week. What do you get when you put a two year old, a three-and-a-half year old, bubbles, precious dresses, and swings together? Inspiration.

Because I am absolutely giddy over these images, I’m just going to let them speak for themselves. Happy Birthday, precious girl!

Emily Turns Four | Magan’s Lens | Austin Children’s Photographer | Magan's Lens | Austin Family, Children, and Wedding Photographer - [...] Back in February, Emily’s sister Sarah turned two. We did a playful photography session with Sarah to document her birthday and created the most adorable birthday invitations with her pictures. Soon, Miss Emily will turn four.  I got together with my favorite ladies for Emily’s birthday session, and had a blast. Four-year-olds are some of my favorite children to photograph because they play, act silly, observe things, listen, and take guidance. [...]
