[soapbox] tuesday

I have been trying to think of what I’d talk about in this edition of the [insert word here] Tuesday post all day. I’ve had several ideas, but thanks to a little show called The Sing-Off, I just came up with the topic. Before I actually step on my soapbox, let me introduce the show.

Have any of you seen Glee, the show where they sing a lot of great songs, remix them, and do smash-ups? Well, I’m kind of addicted. The story line isn’t the greatest, and everyone seems to be able to carry a tune, but the music is just so good.  Thanks to Glee, the new show The Sing-Off was born. Eight groups started out and they can only sing a capella. Last night, I was really disappointed that Maxx Factor was passed through to the next round.

Tonight, I feel exactly the same way.

Noteworthy was let go at the end of the show (and boy did they sing a depressing “swan song”). I can’t believe they kept Maxx Factor again. I hardly recognized the Taylor Swift song they sang and they butchered “Rehab”. My, oh, my do these judges disappoint. They try to make it so dramatic, but all I really want them to do is keep the people I admire.

Stepping off my soapbox.

I’m sorry I don’t have a fun picture to share with you in this post. [insert word here] Tuesday posts are going to be random. What are your thoughts on The Sing-Off?

Gloria - Last weekend at my sister's I caught up on all the episodes of the Sing-Off that I'd missed. I also couldn't believe that they kept Maxx Factor for so long. I think they were trying not to be prejudiced because they were older women, but they were NOT in any way pleasant to listen to. Noteworthy was far more entertaining, and I couldn't believe they were let go before MF. Thumbs down to the judges for that.

“Skate… Skate… As Fast As You Can….”

I’m very excited to introduce you to two people that have played a very big part in mine and Dustyn’s lives. First up is Leslie. She’s been a friend of mine since, uh, 1st Grade. Both of our moms worked at the elementary we attended and we used to “play school” with her younger sister, Anne, after real school was over.  Leslie is the reason I met Dustyn. We were best friends in high school and it’s really fun to be able to say that we married brothers.  Yep, you read that right. Derryk is Dustyn’s brother. Obviously Derryk has played an instrumental part in who Dustyn is because they too have grown up together. [Funny how that happens, huh?]

Leslie pondered several places for their Christmas photos this year. Ultimately, we chose to go to the Whole Foods Ice Skating Rink downtown. Here’s a fun tidbit: I’ve never been ice skating. Every time it’s been planned, something has fallen through. I was a little worried about me falling and busting my bum on the ice, but everything worked out just nicely as I stayed on the sidelines, stood on benches, and laid on the floor near the rink entrance. [PS: we went just after they opened and there were very few people to have to crop out of the photos. Yay!]

{Another sidenote: I’m doing this blog differently than the others. No slideshow. I did layouts with their photos to show a sequence of events or different fun things that happened, so you’ll have to scroll down…}

First up is a little location information. I like the Gingerbread addition on the glass.

Then we did a series of photos where Derryk and Leslie skated toward me. I liked these shots as they prepped to do so:

There were a lot of beautiful moments like this. (Look at those great smiles.)

TheBlasigs 02 Skate... Skate... As Fast As You Can....

We tried some really ballerina-esque shots, resulting in these:

Leslie really got in touch with her inner-ballerina. [Do you see her blue eyes? Aren't they awesome!?]

Even Derryk’s inner-ballerina came out:

We got a little more serious, and tried some poses. Check out the position of Derryk’s ankle in the left photo (looks a little painful):

I love the way the blue of Leslie’s shirt pops out of the photos…

…but just for fun, I played with black and white as well. I love the contrast, and I LOVE Leslie’s expression on the right photo.

There always has to be a classic feet shot. This one is special since it’s in skates!

And this is where we ended… sitting on the ice.

Thank you, Derryk and Leslie for being so wonderful and up to try anything, even on ice. I can attest for their awesome ice skills – I did not see either of them bust their bums on the ice. SKILLS.

Taking an Aggie to the UT Campus for Family Photos…

Let me preface this blog post by saying that yes, Evan is an Aggie. No he wasn’t thrilled to be on the UT campus, but he was extremely cooperative… as long as we didn’t get the UT Tower in the background. I find this humorous and ironic. When Andrea and Steve did their engagement photos on campus, it was also ironic that Andrea began college at A&M as well, though she finished at St. Ed’s in Austin. How is it that I keep suggesting campus as our location for Aggies?  I’m really sorry, guys!

Evan and Gloria are due a huge CONGRATULATIONS because they got engaged the day prior to our session!  I’m so excited for you guys!

Amy and Anna were a little sleepy when we began our session; it was such a nasty, rainy, dreary, wear-your-pajamas-all-day kind of day.  Our back-up plan was to go to the Driskill hotel, and in hindsight, I’m so glad we didn’t go there. It is beautiful and formal… but the beauty of going to campus was being outside and letting the girls play and explore. We tickled Amy a little bit and she soon sprung to life – those big eyes of hers were soaking in every detail. Anna has these wonderful ideas and after I had posed them a few times, the wheels started turning and Anna came up with some fun ideas. She wanted to do the running picture and loved the kissing pictures. She wanted Evan and Mommy to sit in a specific way and then she and Amy filled in and put their hands in the perfect spot. I mean, really, I should be hiring her in ten years when she turns 18. I’m sure by then, she’ll have this posing thing perfected.  I love the imagination and creativity of kids. It’s so pure.

During the session, I could feel myself becoming even more relaxed and child-like as I played with the girls. It was soothing and I could tell that if I just became a little more kid-like, Amy would make the funny faces and show me her beautiful eyes. If I listened to Anna’s ideas and let her work her magic, then maybe I could catch that perfect picture of her pondering and Gloria watching me. More than anything, the love that this family has is so beautiful. They had beautiful moments when they would tell each other “I love you.” It wasn’t a forced or unnatural, for-the-camera moment. It was pure.

Thank you, Evan and Gloria, for allowing me to meet you and the girls. I am one of those women who is scared to be a parent one day. You have shown me that it can be wonderful and beautiful. You have so much love for the girls and they are so amazing because of it.

evan - Magan, I really enjoyed having those pictures taken and you're kind words about our love. It's scary for me sometimes to think that I'm going to be a stepfather to these wonderful girls. I enjoy someone who can see the love that we have. Thanks again for taking the wonderful pictures.

Evan

ps it still hurt a little to be an aggie on that campus.

Magan - Hi Evan! In general parenting is so scary, but these girls adore you! You are the perfect stepdad for them and you're going to be great. I can't even explain how much I love looking through the photos from this session – they really do touch my heart.

-Magan

PS: if I get to help with wedding photography, I promise we'll stay away from campus. :)

A Photographer’s Attempt to Take Her Own Photos

One of the things I have been told several times is, “Photographers need to also be photographed. You need to be on the other side of the camera too.” Well, I want that, but can I just say… Dustyn doesn’t get it. He thinks I’m completely capable, especially since I’m set with my remote now (Thank you, Mom and Dad Blasig.) It’s really hard to capture those candid moments of myself when I’m trying to aim the remote at my camera at the same time. Candid moments often occur because the subject is unaware of the camera. Let’s just say that thanks to a little personal experience, I’m now 100% sure I will be scoping out my own photographer soon.

Really, I just wish these guys from The Beautiful Mess were here to photograph us. I’m digging their work. And their personal goal.

Every year, they travel to a different state and hire a photographer they admire to photograph them. I’ve seen a few of the different sessions they’ve done and wow.  Not only do they get a different style or perspective every time, but they have the experience of working with someone new. (Which, let’s admit it, is a little intimidating, but a great thing for a photographer to keep in mind with his/her clients.) They also get to experience different architecture and have pieces of the country in their pictures. How cool is that?!  (PS: If you look at the link I posted above for their blog, those are all pictures of Candice and Daniel in the background!)

Here is a little sampling of something that happened while Dustyn and I had a few minutes to spare before a session on Sunday. We were playing around with the camera. The tripod was present, as was the aforementioned remote. Dustyn’s expressions are priceless. Love this man!

Family | Mike and Mercedes

I have the prettiest pregnant lady you ever did see for you to meet…and her counterpart, but really… women are just so beautiful when they’re pregnant. Mercedes and Mike were referred to me by the Garcia family. Angelica and Mike are siblings… can you tell? I think they’re all something pretty special.

Mercedes is this bundle of overflowing personality. I love it. She’s got all this spunk and I think she’s just gorgeous. She works at Milk + Honey Spa at the Warehouse District on 2nd Street. I’ve been checkin’ out their website… wondering if Dustyn will be ever so nice and treat me to a mani/pedi there [*wink, wink*] . We headed to the magnificient, historic Driskill Hotel downtown for their session. They also wanted Christmas-y pictures to include in their Christmas cards this year. Mercedes even brought along a copy of their card for me to see to make sure we captured the perfect picture to compliment the card. (How thoughtful!)

The Driskill was so awesome. Their decorations were put up everywhere. Perfect tree downstairs, front and center. Secondary tree upstairs with a great backdrop. Beautiful garland and ornaments decorating the banisters on the stairs. This is going to sound so geeky, but I’m going to let the architecture school girl come out of me for a minute. In architecture, it takes a LOT to do symmetry really well without it being boring. I always struggled with it in school and then I just learned to love asymmetry [true story].  I loved how symmetrical and architectural this building was. Some of the shots we got of the tree are even better because the architecture enforces rhythm, balance, and forces a perspective that leads your eye directly to Mercedes and Mike.. the true subjects of the photos. [Stepping out of architecture world now}

We had a ton of fun playing around the hotel. We tried probably every shot that we could without calling attention to the ourselves so we wouldn’t be kicked out. Thank you, Mike and Mercedes for being SO wonderful and cooperative. You are such beautiful people. I’m so excited for your little baby to be here in April!  Congratulations!
